Homemade Hummus and Pita Chips


Ingredients for Hummus

  • 1 can chickpeas garbanzo beans, drained (15 ounces)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • juice of 1 lemon or 2 limes I prefer lime juice for some reason.
  • 2 garlic cloves crushed (optional)
  • salt to taste
  • cayenne pepper to taste I use only a very small pinch of pepper.

Ingredients for Pita Chips

  • One package of pita bread--I like the thin large pita bread. Look at pictures below.
  • olive oil
  • salt pepper, parmesan cheese, seasonings


Directions for hummus

  1. Put all ingredients in a blender or a food processor and blend until smooth (or the consistency you desire.) If it's too thick, you can add a little bit of water.

Directions for Pita Chips

  1. I take a cookie sheet with an edge and cover it with aluminum foil.
  2. Put the pita bread on the cookie sheet.
  3. Brush both sides of the pita with olive oil using a pastry brush. I am not skimpy with the oil.
  4. Shake salt, garlic salt, seasoned salt, parmesan cheese, or any other seasoning on one side of the pita. If you do both sides it is too much. (Sea salt and pepper would also be good.)
  5. Take kitchen scissors, and cut the pita into into wedges.
  6. Bake at 400° for 4-5 minutes or until lightly brown. They bake quickly, so watch closely!
