Tuesday morning, I started to work on a present for my nephews and niece. I needed to spray paint some old cookie sheets and cake pans; however, I did NOT want my 2 and 4 year old also covered with spray paint. And I knew that my 2 year old would be attracted to the spray paint if I did not do something else to distract her. So I made some homemade sidewalk chalk. It is the easiest thing in the world to make, and so much fun for the children.
Here’s how to do it:
First, you add 1 cup of cornstarch to 1 cup of water. Stir it until it is mixed.
Next, pour it into containers. I used a muffin tin.
Use food coloring to color the liquid.
This would also be a great project where you could teach primary and secondary colors.
Color 3 colors red, blue, and yellow–the primary colors.
Then make green out of blue and yellow.
Make purple out of red and blue.
Make orange out of red and yellow.
Let your kids stir and see the magic occur!
Most food colorings will even tell you how many drops to put of each color so that you get a nice end color, but I just guesstimate. Put less of the darker color when you mix.
Let the kids paint!
