I started a new devotion today on Isaiah 53. The devotion encouraged us to go listen to many songs that focused on what Christ did for us on the cross.
Many of these songs had words straight from Isaiah 53, but many were songs that just had the message of Christ’s death and resurrection and what that means for all of us who believe in the saving work of Christ on the cross.
I found this interesting as the class that I teach in school has been singing many Easter hymns the past month as we always go and sing at a nursing home for our parties. I thought we should sing in class before we go so that the kids are prepared to sing in public. For Valentine’s Day, we sang many songs about the love of God. For Easter, we will of course sing songs that have to do with the truths of Christ’s death and His power over death and the grave.
The wonderful fact is that music stirs the heart in ways that printed words often do not. As we have sang some of the songs in class, I have been moved to tears as I reflect on what Christ has done for me! This was the point of the devotion. The author wanted us to meditate and dwell on the magnitude of the sacrifice Christ did — taking my punishment upon Himself.
We do ourselves a disservice if we only reflect upon Christ’s work of atonement one day out of the year. It is something that really should be reflected on daily. But the actual day of Easter will mean a lot more if prepare our hearts before Easter Sunday is upon us. One great way of doing that is by listening to music that reflects on the truths of Easter and by actually singing songs of praise to God for what He has done.
Here are some of the Easter songs that we have been singing in class:
