We ended the 2nd post on the name of God, Jehovah-shammah, The Lord is There, with the question, “How can a Christian keep from being imprisoned by the world? How can we keep our vision and not lose hope?”

The quote that preceded that question was from Kay Arthur’s book, Lord I Want to Know You. Here is the quote:
We need a future and a hope! For the most part, our world lives for today. “Give it to me now!” The future seems so uncertain, so hopeless to most people that they have lost their vision. Most live for only their immediate happiness. . .
Most Christians live this way. They have lost sight of the blessed hope, the glory of being absent from the body and at home with the Lord. They do not look to the time when they will reign with Jesus on earth (Daniel 7:27). They have lost their will to fight because they have forgotten that their citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20).
They have sat down at the world’s banquet table and glutted themselves with the things of this life. They have little interest in the glories of heaven. They can see and touch and taste and experience “now,” but they cant fathom the glories that are yet to come. Many Christians have become prisoners who will not try to escape. Thus, they are no threat to the world which holds them captive.
Kay Arthur, LORD, I Want to Know You
How can we practically keep our vision and not lose hope in this crazy world? How do we keep our focus on the world that is to come — where we will forever live with Jehovah-shammah, The Lord is There?
Here are 6 ways we can apply this name of God to our every day lives — and keep our focus on where God is: Heaven, our forever home.
- We can take comfort in knowing that although God is in Heaven, His presence is not limited or contained in the Tabernacle or Temple, but is accessible to all who love and obey Him.
- As Christians now, we are the temple of God. Even when we are separated from worshiping with other believers because of illness or other reasons, we still have the Holy Spirit always with us. The Jews in Ezekiel’s time were in captivity and separated from the temple where the presence of God resided– but we always have the Holy Spirit with us if we have accepted Christ as our Savior.
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” I Corinthians 3:16 - God’s presence goes with us. It feels what we feel and takes us through every situation.
“And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” 2 Corinthians 6:16 - God fellowships with His people wherever they are. He fellowshipped with Adam and Eve in the garden, with the Israelites in the wilderness (pillar of cloud and pillar of fire and later the Tabernacle), with the Israelites in the beautiful temple Solomon built and later in the crude temple of Zerubbabel’s time, and now our bodies our His temple. He fellowships with us anywhere we are as not only is “God is there,” but “God is HERE!”
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Hebrews 13:5 - This name reminds us in our darkest hour that God is with us. When you are feeling abandoned and hopeless, address Him as Jehovah Shammah.
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. Psalm 139:7-12 - God wants to manifest His presence in the world through His people. And we should want others to know! We want others to be in Heaven with us. Tell others the glorious hope they can have of being with the Lord forever — Jehovah-shammah: The Lord is There!
As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. John 17:18-22
Here are a few other references that talk about God being here (or there) or where we can see Jesus as our Jehovah-shammah.
- All of Psalm 46
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1
- Matthew 28:20
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
- Matthew 1:23
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us
- Revelation 21:1-3
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
