I have been sharing the notes I prepared for a ladies book study I did about the names of God for several months now. The main book that we used was Kay Arthur’s book, Lord I Want to Know You; however, I used several other books to do my study. At the bottom of the post, you can see links to all of the other posts I have written so far and to the post that shares all of the books that I used to study the names of God.
This week’s study is on the name of God, Jehovah-Shalom.

You probably know that shalom is used by the Jewish people as their “hello” and “goodbye.” The word literally means “peace.” Therefore, this name of God obviously means The Lord is Peace.
As we go along in this busy life, we all have times — usually daily — where we need to experience the peace of God. We all desire to have this peace that passes all understanding. If we want to have lasting, real peace, then we should strive to know Jehovah-Shalom.
Did you know that this name of God is used only one time in the Old Testament?
I had assumed that this name of God was used often in the Bible as shalom was such a common word for the Jews to use. However, this name of God was only used one time. Even though the name of God Jehovah-Shalom was used only one time, the word shalom, translated as “peace” is used about 170 times in the Bible, and derivatives of the Hebrew verb shalem, “to be whole, healthy, at peace,” occur about 400 times in the Bible.
We see the name of God Jehovah Shalom in Judges 6 in the story of Gideon. In this story, God has allowed the Midianites to oppress the Israelites because of their sin. Gideon is hiding from the Midianites while he threshes some wheat. The angel of the Lord appears to Gideon and tells Gideon that he will use Gideon to save the Israelites from the Midianites.
Gideon did not recognize right away that he was speaking to an angel of the Lord. When he lays food on a rock which the angel then consumes with fire coming out of the rock and the angel of the Lord suddenly departs, Gideon recognizes that he had been speaking with the angel of the Lord.
At this point, he is humbled and afraid. He says, “Alas, O Lord God! for because I have seen an angel of the Lord face to face. ” Jehovah-shalom immediately relieves his fears by responding, “Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die. “
Gideon claims this peace of God. He builds an altar to God and names it Jehovah-shalom.
Then Gideon built an altar there unto the Lord, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. Genesis 6:24
Gideon will go on to do many hard things, but he knew he had Jehovah-shalom with him. The Lord is peace gave him peace through the difficult circumstances. He learned that peace only comes by knowing the God of peace. Do you know the God of peace? We cannot experience true peace without Him.

With this divine name, Gideon expressed His confidence that God intended to bless him and to strengthen him for the task to which he had been called.
Next week, I will share ways that we can apply this name to our lives today and I will share some more verses that talk about the peace of God. I will also share the printables I handed out with this lesson. Here are all of the lessons on the names of God that have been shared so far:
