This summer, I am going to do a mom’s book study at our church. I ordered a few books, and the first one I started reading was Becoming Mom Strong: How to Fight with All That’s in You For Your Family & Your Faith by Heidi St. John.
I have only read the first 3 chapters in this book, and I have decided that this is definitely the book we will read together this summer. It is so good for moms who are raising children and teenagers.
You know, in today’s age, we have to be mentally strong. We have to decide to do what is best for our children and our family without caving to the culture around us. And that isn’t easy.
In the first chapter, Heidi starts out with making sure that we know that our priority as moms should be “hearing from the Lord in every aspect of our lives.”
I know that this is what I want to do, but I don’t always prioritize getting up early and making time for Him first. She goes on and says how we are in a war for the hearts and minds of our children. We have to get our hearts tuned to hear the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit so we can tune our children’s hearts to hear the Holy Spirit’s voice. To follow His leading. It is the only way they will not be destroyed by our enemy, Satan.
The main point of the chapter is that our only defense as moms is the Word of God.
The second chapter talks about how God has put our kids here on earth at this time for such a time as this.
We need to be warriors for our children. We need to trust God in every part of our lives, and our kids need to see us trusting Him. We need to see who we are in God’s eyes and be strong moms who raise strong children that one day we can launch out into this world to join the battle for God and His Kingdom!
The third chapter shares how “motherhood is all about courage, from the moment you watch your baby take those first wobbly steps.”
Every mom feels inadequate, feels like they are doing it wrong, gets discouraged, and has days where they just don’t know what to do. Then we are faced with culture that is opposite God and His Word. We are trying to bring up children who will not cave to the culture that is around them. In a world today that is teaching acceptance and tolerance, we need to teach our children that they should expect to be rejected. But before we teach them about rejection from the world, we need to teach them that about their identity in Christ. That they are loved and accepted by Him, and that is what matters! I loved this quote:
The way of the Cross is to live in full view of the world but to keep our eyes on Jesus.
Heidi acknowledges that we will have fears as we go through our journey of motherhood, but that when we cry out to God,
God’s grace takes our fears and transforms them into the kind of courage that motherhood requires.
The victory begins when we choose to obey in spite of our fear.
I still have to read the rest of the book, but I am loving it so far. It does not gloss over what we need to do as moms. It admits that it is hard. But it also shares how worthwhile the battle is and what we need to do to win.
Have you read the book? Let me know what you think!
