Last Thursday, I shared some thoughts on how we should be like Moses when he asked for God’s presence. This week, I will share how we should be like Solomon who asked for God’s wisdom.
In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee. And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast shewed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead. Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude. Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?
II Chronicles 1: 7-10
What a great prayer! We all need wisdom from God on how to speak; how to live; decision to be made; how to parent . . . the list could go on and on. Right now, we are praying how to have wisdom in handling matters with the closing of our house back in Illinois. As my husband is a pastor, there are always matters with the church that need much wisdom.
The wonderful fact about wisdom is that God will give it to us when we ask for it.
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5
Since He tells us to ask God for wisdom, we know it is in God’s will for us to pray for wisdom; and if we pray according to God’s will, He promises to hear and answer!
This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him. I John 5:14-15
Then we see through Solomon’s life that God blesses those who ask for wisdom with far more than just knowledge. With the wisdom that is God-given, we make choices that also bless us materially and with honor by others:
And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee. And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days. I Kings 3:10-13
And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king: Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.
II Chronicles 1:11-12
Of course, wisdom comes through daily studying God’s Word and applying it to our living. Just studying the Proverbs will help us to learn Godly wisdom. God will give us wisdom when we ask Him for it and when we study His Word.
I want His wisdom, don’t you?
I NEED His wisdom to be a successful mom and wife. I just need to claim His promise that He will give it when I ask for it, and then apply my time to studying His Word. He will do His part when I do mine.
