In the past, I have always participated in two Thanksgiving dinners. We would go to my mom’s house and eat our first Thanksgiving for our noon meal, and then we would go to my mother-in-law’s house and eat there for dinner. I always made the desserts and some breads such as pumpkin bread, zucchini bread, cinnamon swirl bread, and banana bread.
One of my desserts I almost always made was this French Apple Pie.
Apple Pie honestly is not my favorite pie, but since there were always guests included in the Thanksgiving dinners, apple pie was usually a favorite of some of the other guests. This recipe is a recipe my mom would make from time to time, and I liked it as I didn’t have to make a top pastry crust. The top crumb mixture tastes so good! Here is what the crumb topping looks like before it is baked.
I also would make these pumpkin cookies for the kids for Thanksgiving! Here is the recipe, and let me know what is your favorite dessert for Thanksgiving!

- One pastry pie shell
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- Dash of salt
- 6 cups thinly sliced apples
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup firm butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
-
Line a 9" pie pan with pastry.
-
Stir together sugar, flour, nutmeg, cinnamon, and dash of salt.
-
Mix lightly with 6 cups thinly sliced apples.
-
Pour into pastry-lined pie pan.
-
Mix until crumbly the ingredients for the crumb topping.
-
Sprinkle crumb topping over the pie.
-
Bake 40-50 minutes at 425 degrees. If the topping or crust is browning too quickly, cover with foil for the last 15 minutes of baking.
