by Lois Gladys Leppard
Right now, I am reading the Mandie books. They are great Christian fiction books about a girl named Amanda Shaw or Mandie for short. She is one-fourth Cherokee and when her father died, he asked an old Indian, Ned, that was one of his best friends to watch over Mandie for him. Mandie’s stepmother was mean to her and liked her real daughter, Irene, better. She sent Mandie to go work for another family, but Uncle Ned manages to send her to her father’s brother, her Uncle John. Mandie’s real mother comes to meet her at last, and her mother and Uncle John get married.
In these books, Mandie solves many mysteries at home and at her boarding school. She even gets to go on a trip to Europe with her grandmother and solve the mysteries happening there. Her best friend, Joe, also helps her to solve mysteries; he likes her and plans to marry her one day. I love reading these books and am right now reading books 6-10 that came all in one big book that I got from my aunt as a present.
These books became popular after my growing-up years, but my younger sisters really enjoyed them. As Christian fiction books, a parent does not need to worry that there would be questionable content in them. They are great books for 8-12 year old girls. The last one was written in 2006, and there are at least 40 of the Mandie books, as well as a Young Mandie Series and five special Mandie books.
The author, Lois Gladys Leppard died in 2008 at the age of 84 (1924-2008). She wrote her first Mandie book when she was only 11! It did not get published until she was an adult, however. According to the Mandie books website, Lois Gladys Leppard “has also been a professional singer, actress, and playwright. Lois studied at the New York School of Music and the Voice Beautiful Institute in New York under Glenn Morris Starkie. Additionally, she and her two sisters, Sibyl and Louise, sang professionally as the Larke Sisters and appeared in the operetta Bohemian Girl and were presented at Carnegie Hall.” She also wrote several plays and was employed with Columbia Pictures. What a talented woman! Supposedly, she based some of the books on events that happened in her own mother’s past.
You can get the books at many retailers including Amazon and Christian Book Distributers.
